MASTOFIN-AZ® is a powerful antimocribial combinationfor therapy of clinical mastitis. In several studies, minimum inhibitory concentrations of cloxacillin for most of Streptococcus sp. and Staphylococcus sp. causing mastitis is 0.5 μg/ml. This is, at least, 10 times less than most of penicillins. This is because of the chemical group that protects the β-lactamase ring. Then resistance in most of Gram-positive coccus is virtually nil. Additionally, it has been shown that most of antimicrobials inhibit action of mammary macrophages. Cloxacillin in MASTOFIN-AZ®, DO NOT inhibit defense functions at mammary level, which is basic for healing and health of this tissue.

An excellent protection of post-partum mastitis has been achieved specially that caused by Staphylococcus sp. by the use of MASTOFIN-AZ® in the immediately previous period before labor.

Spiramycin in MASTOFIN-AZ® cooperates in destruction of Gram-positive bacteria causing mastitis. In most of mastitis cases, pH is elevated. This pH change is ideal for optimal function of spiramycin. In case there are Staphylococcus sp. resistant to
Cloxacillin, it is very difficult to find Staphylococcus sp. that resist double attack by spiramycin-cloxacillin.

It is known that mastitis affects production up to 50% of affected quarter after therapy. This is because of severe inflammatory process and substitution of glandular tissue by connective tissue. The balanced formula of MASTOFIN-AZ® includes an anti-inflammatory steroid that reduce glandular damage for excessive swelling, and papain, an enzyme that reduce collagen and fibrin deposit and reduce loss of production after a mastitis process.
